History Comes Alive at Historic Hat Creek Ranch
Historic Hat Creek Ranch adopts cutting edge technology to provide a self-guided tour for visitors to engage with its history.
CACHE CREEK, BC – Historic Hat Creek Ranch has partnered with award-winning tech company, QuestUpon, to create an interactive walking tour that combines geocaching, augmented reality, trivia, scavenger hunts, and more, for visitors to the historic Ranch.
“When I saw how this innovative technology could be used in a fun and educational way, while engaging with history, I wanted to bring this to the Ranch for our guests,” said Don Pearse, General Manager of Historic Hat Creek Ranch. “This self-guided walking tour gives them a fun and new way to explore this historic location.”
The Historic Hat Creek Ranch Quest takes the visitor on an interactive geocaching tour through the property, guiding them to various points of interest. Some of these include scavenger hunts, historic trivia, collecting items in augmented reality to build a wagon for the Gold Rush, seeing animals and wildlife, taking photos, and more.
“It’s a unique experience when you geocache through the Ranch and then do a mission that lets you to see things come to life in the real world, using your smartphone as your guide,” said Tammy Meyers, Co-Founder and COO of QuestUpon. “There is a real ‘sense of place’ that happens when you combine these elements in a quest, resulting in a very memorable and enhanced experience for the visitor.”
About Historic Hat Creek Ranch
Historic Hat Creek Ranch was founded in 1860 by Donald McLean, a Hudson’s Bay trader. It has changed hands through the years and was once the largest cattle ranch in the area. The historic roadhouse was a key stopping point for prospectors and the stagecoaches that were migrating north to the 1800’s gold rush. There are over twenty-five historic buildings still standing on the property and we invite our guests to step inside and see the history that abounds here. Guided tours, stagecoach rides, gemstone panning are all included with admission and operate daily from 10:00am – 4:30pm, May through September. There is a Shuswap Native Interpretive site that also operates on the property with daily tours and activities. The Friend’s of Historic Hat Creek Ranch operate the site under contract with the Province of British Columbia. We are a non-profit society dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the ranch.
